Similarities

Flat Burrs

We would be remiss if we didn’t talk about the burrs in these grinders. Since burrs are the part that crush your coffee beans, they are one of the key components in any grinder.

The Ceado and Mahlkonig both have flat burrs, which are famous for their consistency. Whenever you grind coffee with either of these machines, they will create perfectly uniform coffee particles.

As far as your beverages go, expect a sweet, rich flavor that your customers are sure to love.

Stepless Grind Adjustment System

Dialing in the grind is simply part of using an espresso grinder. Your baristas will need to correct the fineness setting on the grinder periodically. This is even truer if you’re using the grinder for multiple purposes, such as grinding both espresso and drip coffee.

To ensure your baristas get to enjoy the ultimate level of precision, these grinders have a stepless system. Instead of limiting you to preset fineness options, you can turn the dial or knob to any point, so you can make fineness adjustments in increments as small as necessary.

On-Demand Grinding

To give you a better understanding of what on-demand grinding means, let’s look at what the alternative, doser grinding, means. A doser grinder dispenses your coffee grounds into a container that is attached to the grinder. Baristas can then disperse a dose of coffee grounds from that container into their portafilter.

In an on-demand system, like that used by the E37S and K30, there is no attached container and the grounds are issued directly into the portafilter. Because you’re not drawing from pre-ground espresso that may have gotten stale, you’re getting the freshest possible coffee every time.

Shot Counter

If you’re a business owner, you’ll know that understanding the amount of resources your business needs to run is critical. You need to have a clear picture of what it takes to run your business on a day-to-day basis. In a coffee shop, that means knowing how much coffee and espresso you go through.

The Ceado E37S and Mahlkonig K30 can provide you a clear snapshot of your coffee expenses. Thanks to their shot counters, you’ll have a built-in record of how many shots of espresso the grinder was used to prepare in a specific time frame.

Differences

Dimensions

If you were to set the Ceado E37S and Mahlkonig K30 next to each other, you might immediately notice one of their big differences: their overall dimensions. It’s clear that the Mahlkonig K30 is much taller than the E37S.

Those who want a grinder that can slide underneath cabinets, then, may be drawn to the Ceado. However, the Mahlkonig does have an optional short hopper you can pick that will decrease the height of the grinder.

Burr Size

These grinders may both have flat burrs, but the size of the burrs in question is different. The Ceado E37S’s burrs are 83mm and the Mahlkonig K30’s are 65mm. As you can see, that’s a difference of almost 20mm.

Because it has much larger burrs, the Ceado E37S has the slight advantage when it comes to grinding speed. Additionally, its burrs will be able to stay a little cooler during grinding, since they won’t need to turn as much to grind the same amount of coffee beans.

Hopper Capacity

When your coffee shop is in the middle of a rush with a line of thirsty customers at the counter, it’s incredibly inconvenient to have to stop what you’re doing at add coffee beans to your grinder’s hopper. You’ll want to keep going for as long as possible to fulfill orders in a timely fashion.

The ability to grind longer will come down to the capacity of your grinder’s hopper. The more beans it can hold, the longer it can grind uninterrupted.

The Ceado E37S’s hopper can hold up to 1.3 pounds, which isn’t exactly small. However, the Mahlkonig K30’s standard hopper can hold up to 3.3 pounds, which is drastically larger. It can grind for a longer amount of time because of this.

Mahlkonig K30 Optional Short Hopper

We mentioned earlier in this comparison that the Mahlkonig K30 is much taller than the Ceado E37S. That is mostly because it has a greater hopper capacity contributing to its height.

If you’re drawn to the Mahlkonig but are worried about your ability to accommodate it beneath low-hanging shelves or cabinets, you don’t need to be. The Mahlkonig K30 is compatible with a short hopper that drops its height by a few inches for you, decreasing the footprint it has on your counter.

Ceado E37S Steady Lock Design

As much as we might wish otherwise, grinders aren’t always consistent all day long. The fineness your baristas have selected can very slowly change over hours of grinding, possibly impacting your beverages’ flavor.

How do you fix this? Well, the traditional method is just recalibrating the grinder’s fineness setting every so often. New baristas aren’t likely to remember to this, though. Even experienced ones may forget when you’re in the middle of your busiest period.

The Ceado’s solution to this problem is a steady lock design. Once you set your grind fineness, the Ceado will lock it firmly into place. No more having to worry about shifting settings while you work.

Mahlkonig K30 Built-In Fan

If you’re going to be grinding nonstop frequently, another thing you’ll need to worry about is the internal temperature of your grinder. During intensive use, it’s not uncommon for grinders start to get hot, putting your coffee beans at risk of being burnt.

This is a complete non-issue with the Mahlkonig K30. It has a robust fan built right into it, keeping the grinder cool as can be no matter how long you need to use it for at once.

Ceado E37S Worm Gear Adjustment Knob

With stepless grinders, you usually make tweaks to fineness by sliding a collar beneath the hopper from side to side. Although this design is perfectly functional, it can sometimes be a hassle to reach up for the collar.

The Ceado E37S updates this design with its worm gear adjustment knob. Whenever your baristas need to make any changes to the texture of the grind, all they need to do is twist the knob that’s front and center.

Mahlkonig K30 Illuminated Display

Preparing a shot of espresso is a surprisingly precise process. Baristas need to be attentive at every step, from grinding to brewing. If they’re not, they may miss visual cues that something is wrong, such as the espresso being too watery or the color being off.

This is why it’s important to provide ample lighting for baristas, which is something Mahlkonig understood when they designed the K30. This grinder has an illuminated display that allows baristas to easily read it at all times regardless of the lighting around them.

Ceado E37S Color Options

More likely than not, a lot of thought went into designing the interior of your business. You considered colors, furniture, and decorations in a way that formed a cohesive aesthetic for your employees and customers to admire.

Why stop there? With the right appliances, including your espresso grinder, you can continue your thoughtful design even further. The Ceado E37S is perfect for that end, since it is available in either black or white.

With the additional color option, you have more ability to ensure all aspects of your business promote your look, including your espresso grinder.

Which Grinder Should You Buy?

The Mahlkonig K30 and Ceado E37S are interesting to compare. Both are high-end grinders suitable for commercial use, so they have a lot of similar qualities. At the same time, they also have their share of differences.

Either way, you’re getting a great espresso grinder. It’s still true that there are convincing incentives to choose one or the other.

One aspect you can start looking at is the hopper capacity. If you’re going to be grinding coffee and espresso continuously, you’ll want a grinder with a larger hopper, like the K30. That way, you’re able to grind even longer with fewer pauses for a refill.

But what if you’re worried about counterspace? The Ceado E37S’s shorter size may be better for you in that case, or you can choose to purchase the Mahlkonig K30 with its short hopper.

Are you planning on using your grinder to exclusively grind espresso? The Ceado’s steady lock system could be excellent for you, then, because it allows you to lock a particular fineness setting in place.

With all that in mind, here’s the bottom line:

If you want a grinder that can consistently perform at a commercial level in coffee shop or restaurant settings, the Mahlkonig K30 is the better choice. Its larger hopper and fan will make it possible for it to go all day long.

Home enthusiasts and small businesses may benefit more from the Ceado E37S, which is more compact and can lock a particular fineness setting in place for you.
