Similarities

Stepless Grind Adjustment

Different coffee blends require different grind fineness – you can’t just grind every single blend to the same texture. There are two ways to adjust the fineness settings on your grinder: stepped or stepless.

On a stepped grinder, you’d have a range of pre-set options to select, like numbers ranging from finest to coarsest. This setup is great for beginners, but experienced baristas may lament the lack of flexibility.

The alternative is stepless grind adjustment, which both these Mahlkonigs use. In a stepless grind adjustment system, the possibilities are endless because you can select any setting on a sliding scale of fineness. With all these options available to you, you can be sure you’ll have one that’s perfect for just about any type of coffee or espresso you’re making.

Flat Burrs

Flat burrs are the burr design of choice in the E80 Supreme and E65S. This helps promote uniformity in your grinding, as the particles produced by either grinder will all be the same size.

Another benefit to the flat burrs is that the coffee and espresso produced by them has a pleasing and sweet flavor. If your customers enjoy sweet drinks, this could be a plus for your business.

Quiet Grinding

Many businesses work hard to produce a particular atmosphere for their customers. This is especially true for restaurants and coffee shops, where people often go to relax or take a break.

Nothing ruins an atmosphere quite like repeated loud noises, such as those which can come from a grinder. The good news is, both the E80 Supreme and E65S were created to run quieter than competitor grinders. Although they’ll never be completely silent, you can still anticipate that they won’t be thunderous and disruptive to the atmosphere your business is trying to establish.

Portafilter Holder

Any business owner understands the value of multitasking. The more you can do at once, the more time you can save, allowing you to focus on things that matter.

Some grinders, however, don’t make this easy. If they don’t have a portafilter holder, your baristas will be tethered to them during use as they hold the portafilter in place themselves. This obviously isn’t efficient, as your baristas would likely be more useful working on other jobs, like talking to customers and taking more orders.

To free your baristas up, these Mahlkonigs both have portafilter holders. Rather than be forced to hold the portafilter up themselves, either the E80 Supreme or the E65S can keep the portafilter in place for your baristas.

Cooling System

If you get tons of coffee and espresso orders every day, then your grinder will probably be running almost constantly all day long. The wrong grinder won’t be able to handle this and will overheat, putting your coffee beans at risk of being scorched.

It’s safe to say that you don’t want your customers to end up with burnt and bitter-tasting drinks! The Mahlkonig E80 Supreme and E65S both have solutions to that problem: cool grinding. Either one has built-in systems that help keep the grinders cool, even during hours-long grinding sessions.

Adjustable Spout

Ideally, you should grind espresso directly into the portafilter. This helps you get the grounds evenly spread in the basket, leading to a balanced extraction in the brew step of the drink-making process.

With some grinders, this can be difficult because their spouts are stuck in one place. Unless your portafilter is just the right size for the spout, you might end up struggling to even out the grounds in the basket.

Using the adjustable spouts on either the E80 Supreme or E65S, however, you can be sure that you’re always able to grind into the middle of every basket.

Grinding Speed

Just like you don’t want to serve your customers subpar drinks, you also don’t want them to have to wait in line long. The speed of your grinder can certainly help with that. A fast grinder can blaze through making single or double shots, allowing your baristas to move that much faster.

The Mahlkonig E80 Supreme and E65S are both amazingly fast. Either one can grind up to 7 grams of espresso a second, so you can be sure your baristas won’t have to spend so much time waiting for your grinder to catch up with them.

Plus, at the end of the day, this speed means less of a wait for your customers.

Differences

Burr Size

Grinder burrs come in a range of sizes. In this comparison, the burrs in the E80 Supreme and E65S differ in size from each other, although their shape is the same.

The E80 Supreme has super-sized 80mm burrs, whereas the E65S has smaller 65mm burrs. Why does the burr size matter?

In a nutshell, bigger burrs grind more quickly, and they can stay cooler during use because they don’t need to turn as much. The massive burrs in the E80 Supreme contribute to its speed and cool grinding, which is part of the reason why it’s an excellent choice for medium to large businesses.

Hopper Size

The standard hopper size on these Mahlkonigs also differs from each other. On top of the Mahlkonig E80 Supreme, you’ll find a hopper that can hold just under four pounds of beans.

On the flipside, the E65S’s hopper can hold up to a little over 2.5 pounds of beans. That means the E80 Supreme’s hopper is about 50% larger.

This is important for businesses with a high volume of espresso orders. A larger hopper won’t empty as quickly, meaning you can grind longer without needing to pause for a refill.

Mahlkonig E80 Supreme Disc Distance Detection

Do you want to have the most control possible over your grinder? Then you’ll want to be sure your grinder is as accurate as you can be.

That’s where the E80 Supreme’s patented Disc Distance Detection system comes into play. It calculates the distance between the burrs down to a jaw-droppingly precise 1 micron. As your baristas dial in the grind, they’ll be able to see exactly what setting they’re at and make adjustments accordingly.

Mahlkonig E65S Programmable Recipes

If you have a high rate of turnover, then you’ll be worried about training new employees as quickly as possible. In any coffee shop or restaurant, there are so many different pieces of equipment to teach new hires to use, that training can be difficult.

The Mahlkonig E65S, fortunately, doesn’t have to be yet another piece of equipment that will take a long time for employees to get the hang of. It has an easy-to-read icon menu with 6 programmable recipes.

You can program the proper settings for specific drinks into the E65S, so all your baristas need to do when it’s time to grind espresso is choose the correct recipe.

Mahlkonig E80 Supreme Spout Illumination

Poor lighting in the workspace is one of the worst things that can happen in a coffee shop. Making espresso-based drinks takes skill, practice, and concentration. To ensure your baristas can consistently prepare quality beverages, you’ll want to make sure they have every advantage possible – including clear lighting.

That’s why the Mahlkonig E80 Supreme has built-in spout lighting. It lights up the immediate workspace by the grinder, making it possible for your baristas to see precisely what they’re doing even if the lighting around them is otherwise dim.

Mahlkonig E65S Color Options

Making a good first impression on each customer is important, especially if you want them to become regulars. Part of a good first impression, of course, is visuals. An unattractive space might be enough to keep someone from returning to your business.

With the Mahlkinig E65S, you have a bit more flexibility to ensure your first impression is exactly what you want it to be. We offer it in black or white, so you can choose the one that you feel would look best on your countertop.

Mahlkonig E80 Supreme High-Resolution Display

Operating the Mahlkonig E80 Supreme couldn’t be easier. On the front of the grinder, you’ll find a 3.5-inch high-resolution display.

This display makes it so simple to tweak your grind settings on a daily basis. Additionally, its size allows employees to see it from a wide angle, so they don’t have to hunch right in front of it constantly to monitor it while grinding.

Pricing Considerations

We at Majesty Coffee want to be 100% sure we’re giving our customers the best deal possible. This is why we offer our customers the most competitive prices you’ll find online.

The Mahlkonig E80 Supreme is in our store for $3,250 and the Mahlkonig E65S for $2,200.

Which is Best for You?

Both these Mahlkonigs are quality grinders that live up to Mahlkonig’s esteemed name. Given how excellent they both are, how do you choose the right one for you?

There are several different factors you can consider to help you make your choice. For instance, think about your and your employees’ skill levels. Are your baristas extremely skilled, or will you need to train new hires frequently?

If you’ll have to catch novices up to speed often, then you’ll want a grinder that’s as easy to use as possible. The Mahlkonig E65S’s icon menu with programmable recipes is perfect for shortening the amount of time you need to spend training new hires on how to use a grinder.

Also consider the type of drinks you’ll be making. If your menu is filled with specialty beverages, you may need the precision and control offered by the E80 Supreme’s Disc Distance Detection technology.

Likewise, the E80 Supreme is probably the grinder for you if your business has back-to-back espresso drink orders. Its larger hopper size allows it to grind continuously without needing refills as often as the E65S might.

However, the E65S’s choice of black or white color options could be ideal for businesses with a very particular aesthetic. By being able to choose a black or white grinder, it’s easier to be sure your new grinder will fit in with your other appliances.

This is our advice:

Pick the Mahlkonig E80 Supreme if your business has highly skilled baristas and you have a high volume of espresso-based orders every day. This grinder will have no problem keeping up with the rush.

On the other hand, you should go with the Mahlkonig E65S when user-friendliness is of the utmost importance to you. Being able to program recipes into it makes it perfect for beginners, who can just select the right recipe every time they use it.
